About Hamiltons Bluff
Hamiltons Bluff Vineyard was established in 1995 by John Andrews and his youngest son, Jamie. It is located in Canowindra in the heart of the Cowra wine district, a leisurely four-hour drive west of Sydney and two- and-a-half hours north of Canberra. It is located on the Western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in the Belubula River Valley.
The first plantings amounted to forty acres of Chardonnay, but have now expanded to over 110 acres, which is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Semillon and Shiraz. They have also recently bought another vineyard in Orange, some 500 meters higher and in a noted cool climate. It allows them to increase their portfolio to include cooler climate styles of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Viognier.
The two sites were chosen with great care and forethought as to their individual characteristics. The differences in geology, temperature, rainfall and aspect all have clearly different effects on the growing of the vines and as such present a broad range of grape flavours and wine styles. The Canowindra vineyard tends more to the full bodied, fruit driven style of wine, while the Orange vineyard leans towards the more the delicate, aromatic flavours. In both, though, the yields are kept low to maintain the high quality of the fruit.
The Cellar Door at Hamiltons Bluff was opened in 1998 and was designed, by John, who is an architect, and Jamie to be functionary and understated. It is a corrugated iron shed, which incorporates steel, wood, concrete, slate and glass to function as office, working shed and tasting room. It nevertheless is very stylish for all its understatedness.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon and Shiraz are some of the varieties available at their Cellar Door. So, why not take a trip out there and see for yourself? It is a great experience to get out on the country and taste some of Australia’s best wines and enjoy country hospitality.
