About Kalari Wines
Kalari Wines is situated on the banks of the Lachlan River in Cowra, 300km west of Sydney, New South Wales. It is a family-owned boutique vineyard and was established in 1995, when they planted Chardonnay, Shiraz and Verdelho and later added Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Semillon in 1997.
The name ‘Kalari’ is the Wiradjuri tribe’s name for the Lachlan River. This aboriginal tribe were the original occupants of the land before European settlement.
Kalari Wines have opted for the production of four quite different wine styles, each from the Verdelho grape variety. These include a light, elegant dry wine, a semi-sweet table wine, ‘Fortelho’ - the first fortified wine produced by a Cowra vineyard - and a dessert wine. They take great pride in being specialists in this unique production combination.
They do, however, produce table wines, too, including: Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Semillon and Shiraz.
The Cellar Door was transformed from an old shed to what they describe now as a ‘charmingly rustic’ building, with a veranda enclosed in glass where visitors can sit in the shade, sip some great wine and take in the spectacular views. All in all, it is a most welcoming place to visit and well worth the effort of the journey.
The Cellar Door is also used as an art gallery and displays many of the local artist’s works and artefacts. Visitors can stroll around the gallery, while sipping a delicious Kalari wine. They can even buy many of the exhibits, if they so wish. What a way to enjoy the local culture!
The Cellar Door is also the perfect venue for groups for wine tasting and functions, which can be catered for, using local produce platters, by prior arrangement.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho are the varieties of great wines available at Kalari Wines Cellar Door. Or, of course, wines can be ordered from their web site.
