About Bago Vineyards
Bago Vineyards was established in 1985 by Jim and Kay Mobbs. It is located on their large property in the Hastings River Region on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. The vineyard lies on alluvial flats and has rich vibrant soils. They have planted a wide range of vines, some of which are considered exotic. They are: Albarino, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chanel Paradisa, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Tannat, Verdelho and Viognier.
The name of the vineyard, Bago, was coined in honour of Broken Bago Mountain. The word is thought to have come from a regional aboriginal word for mountain, ‘bulkara’, the ‘broken’ part refers to the shattering of seams of rock in old gold mining shafts.
The history of the Mobbs family’s involvement with winemaking goes back to the 19th Century, when Muscatel and Isabella vines were planted at Ballengarra and Tuffins Lane.
The vineyard today carries on that tradition by producing some of the best wines of the Hasting River Region. They believe that ‘a wine is only ever as good as the people behind it’ and the people who work at Bago Vineyards are the best. They are dedicated and passionate about the profession and put their heart and souls into producing the very best products possible.
Bago is a single vineyard which displays all the particular characteristics of the coastal region. The terroir of the estate is such that their products are completely unique and special to their micro-climate.
The vineyard is located in the Camden Haven basin, fifteen kilometres east of Laurieton, which, in the past, has experienced volcanic activity. Now the soils are rich and well drained and perfect for growing superior fruit.
Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Albarino, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Verdelho and Viognier are the varieties to be sampled at their Cellar Door.
