About Arrowfield Estate
The Arrowfield Estate in the Upper Hunter Valley lies between Coolmore and Woodlands Horse Studs, with superb views of the valley and the Doyles and Martindale Ranges in Wollemi National Park.
The Arrowfield Estate winery specialises not only in producing great wines, but also has wonderful storage capacity and crushing facilities. The storage is in stainless steel tanks, equipped with cooling and fermentation systems as well as in French and American oak barrels. They also have a climatically controlled cellar for the aging of 20,000 cases. Add to this their modern laboratory, which tests all stages of the winemaking process with clinical precision, then you have the very modern model of a major winery.
There is a long history connected with The Arrowfield Estate winery, which coincides with the actual discovery and development of the Hunter Valley. The eastern side of the valley, on the coastal reaches, was discovered before 1800, but it was not until 1819 that the Upper Hunter Valley was found by the intrepid explorers, John Howe and George Bowman.
Bowman took a liking to the Arrowfield land and by 1824 he became a squatter on it. In 1834 he bit the bullet and began the purchase of the land by instalments. It took him seven years to pay it off and in the meantime he had built a stone homestead using convict labour. The old convict cells still exist to this day and are in fact used as cellars.
Today’s Arrowfield Estate has come a long way from those hardy days. They have had spectacular success at National and International wine shows and have collected over thirty-five trophies, 153 Gold medals, 305 Silver medals and 820 Bronze medals for their wines, which include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Semillon, Verdelho and Viognier.
