About Broke Estate

When the Ryan Family established the Australian wine title Broke Estate on Monkey Place Creek in 1987 they became members of a long line of pioneers in the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley.

They have 55 acres of soil planted to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz fruit, released under two Australian labels: Broke Estate and Ryan.

Broke Estate wines are traditional, mature Hunter classics, while the Ryan wines are of the more contemporary class and are still full of flavour, but are for drinking now.

The Broke Estate Winery has a delightful cellar door, which is actually a 1890s heritage-listed settler's cottage, affectionately called Albert Hall. It has magnificent views of Brokenback Range. There Matthew and Tina will serve you and let you taste the wines to your heart’s content. They will also entertain the kids with the ducks, lambs and goats.

You can become a Cellar Door member and get regular newsletters of events on their calendar, vineyard functions and vintage releases.

Broke Wines are noted for the distinct flavours. The Chardonnay, for example, has clear melon characteristics, while the Cabernets are intense in flavour and colour and do age well.

The Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Lacrima Angelorum, Moussant and Semillon are all made with traditional French techniques and styles. The team at Broke Wines are dedicated in their efforts to produce fruit of great quality and all through the viticulture process the maximum care and attention is given to their work.

The same can be said for the winemakers. The very best oak is used to mature the wine and the care and attention that they, too, give to the process is second to none.

It is well worth adding this vineyard to your next visit to the Hunter Valley. You will be rewarded for your efforts.
