About Broke's Promise Vineyard & Olive Grove
Snuggled comfortably between the foothills of Yengo National park and the banks of the Wollombi Brook, with fantastic views of Brokenback Range and Yellow Rock lies the family-owned vineyard and olive grove known as Broke's Promise.
They specialise in hand-crafted wines, utilising some of the Hunter Valley's most famous varietals, such as: Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho. They also produce the Northern Italian red variety style, called Barbera.
The vines are located by the river in sandy loam and basalt soil, which is just about perfect for the production of wines of great quality. There are eight acres of vines, with Chardonnay the first to be planted - in 1994 -which has produced particularly distinctive regional styles of wines since 1998. The Barbera, planted in 1999, is a wonderful medium-bodied aromatic style wine, which is a delight to have with foods of the Mediterranean.
The Shiraz, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho were planted more recently, but are already displaying the marvellous qualities of the Hunter region.
The award-winning Andrew Margan from Margan Family Wines is the winemaker and has been responsible for making wine for Broke's Promise since 1998.
Broke's Promise also has twenty-three acres of olive grove, which was planted in November 1996 and consists of Frantoio varieties of Corregiola and Paragon from central Italy, which have a delectable fruity oil with a slight peppery finish. They also grow varieties of Spanish Manzanilla and Greek Kalamata, which are produced for table olives.
The Broke's Promise Vineyard & Olive Grove is about six kilometres from the little village of Broke. Broke itself is steeped in history, from the thirteen thousand years of aboriginal custodianship to the early settlers of the 1800s, as the area became popular as a stock route.
Now there are vineyards, farms, cellar door wine and oil tasting, accommodation and many activities for visitors to the great Hunter Valley.
