About Calais Estate Wines

Calais Estate is a self-contained boutique winery where all facets of the making of the wines take place at the vineyard. They grow their own grapes, harvest, crush them and produce wines of outstanding quality. The many varieties include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Durif, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz, Traminer, Verdelho, Viognier and Zinfandel.

20 acres of Calais Estate are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Semillon and Shiraz. They also acquire premium quality fruit from other selected Hunter Valley vineyards, with their eye ever on quality and consistency.

The unique soils and climate of the Hunter Valley are ideal conditions for winemaking and the people at Calais Estate have taken full advantage of them. The Pokolbin area, which is where the vineyard is located, is renowned for its fine growing qualities and rich deep soils. Calais Estate Winery was once a dairy and cattle farm, famous in the area for its milk, butter and beef.

It was in 1971 that the change to winegrowing came about, when the first vines were planted. In July 2000, the Bradley family bought Calais Estate and immediately began to make changes, mostly in the landscaping, planting of hundreds of trees and flowers and in the renovations to the Winery, Cellar Door and old Winemaker's Cottage.

Their Cellar Door has in fact won the 'Best Cellar Door'  in the Lower Hunter Business Awards for three years running: 2004, 2005 & 2006) Their famous hospitality is something special to experience and the staff will just about fall over themselves to help you with advice and information on all of the Calais Estate range of wines.

So, get yourself along to experience some true Hunter Valley cordiality and fun – and maybe taste a drop or two of their great wines.
