About Camyr Allyn Wines
John and Judy Evers’ dreams came true when they bought Camyr Allyn North just outside the village of East Gresford on the banks of the Allyn River. The real culmination of their dreams actually was when they released their Camyr Allyn Wines, all grown on the estate.
The three varieties of grapes they grow at Camyr Allyn Wines are Merlot, Shiraz and Verdelho, which form the base for their stable of seven wines. The other four being what they term ‘lifestyle wines’: a Sparkling Merlot Shiraz, a Rose, Liqueur Verdelho and a Sweet Verdelho.
Their first release was the 2001 Merlot, while the current releases are the 2007 Verdelho, the 2007 Sweet Verdelho, the 2006 Rose, 2005 Merlot and Shiraz and 2004 for the Sparkling Shiraz.
The Chalk Stream Range was the inspired creation of John, who is a mad fly fisherman, as are his two sons. It’s hard to believe, but the new range of wines are named after flies! The Bredbo Blend came first, appropriately, since this fly is believed to be Australia’s first known; the Matuka Merlot and the Caddis Cabernet (presumably they are flies, too) are also available now.
John sources the wines from top vineyards around the country and ages them in his own hogsheads at Gresford. Peter Leuver, the author of Fur and Feather, designs and illustrates the packaging. These special packs are limited to 500 and come in a black silk-lined box with a leaflet replica of Peter’s fly box, with information about the fly and an example tied by Robert Moss. Each 750ml bottle is individually numbered. These delightful packs have become collector’s items.
They also have a great Cellar Door, where you’ll be made most welcome to taste all the wines on offer, including the new Muscat.
