About Cooper Wines

Situated in the picturesque Lovedale region of the Hunter Valley lies the vineyard known as Cooper Wines. It is owned and lovingly cared for by Max and Vicki Cooper whose mutual philosophy is to produce premium quality wines that are not commercially available and to maintain a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

It’s one thing to work hard towards your dream, quite another to enjoy the journey. That is what Max and Vicki are best at. They and their staff place a high premium on customer service and satisfaction and you’ll find this in bucket loads at the Cellar Door.

Max and Vicki established Cooper Wines in 2001when they bought the Allanmere vineyard and winery on Lovedale Road, Lovedale. It is a parcel of land that was once a part of the old Penfolds Sparkling Vale vineyard. Planting of vines began as early as 1921, with the first vintage of mainly Semillon being released in 1924. Penfolds abandoned the vineyard after a few decidedly bad rainy seasons waterlogged the vineyard. The vineyard changed hands a few more times between 1985 and 2001, with Dr Newton Potter and his wife Ginny buying the place and establishing it as Allanmere Wines. In 1996 they sold it to Monarch Winemaking Services and now it is home to Max and Vicki Cooper and exists under the happy new name of Cooper Wines.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Marsanne, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz, Verdelho are the varieties available at the Cellar Door, all of which are superb in quality and reflect the character and unique tastes of the great Hunter Valley.

After much deliberation and soul-searching, they have now begun using screw caps on some of their fresh whites. They believe it is the way of the future for some of the wines and have learned that indeed the wines keep their flavour longer. But they still use the cork for the reds and the Victoria's Chardonnay to ‘allow bottle maturation to take place.’
