About Ernest Hill Wines

In the Hunter Valley's famous Pokolbin District lies the vineyard known as Ernest Hill Wines. It was first planted in the 1970s by Harry Tulloch for Seppelts Wines, then renamed the Pokolbin Creek Vineyard, when John Davis bought it in the the late 1980s.

In 1999, the Wilson Family bought part of the vineyard and renamed it Ernest Hill Vineyard. It has six hectares planted to Chardonnay, Semillon, Traminer and Verdelho and one red in the form of Tempranillo. They also access 3.2 hectares of shiraz and Merlot leased from the vineyards next door on Ernest Hill.

The year 2002 saw their first vintage under the Ernest Hill label: the Cyril Semillon and the Alexander Chardonnay. In 2003, the Gewurztraminer, Shiraz and Verdelho were added, then in 2004 they produced a late- picked Semillon. Now the range includes two Merlots, a Reserve Shiraz and a Moscato-style dessert wine.

Their philosophy at Ernest Hill is to produce premium estate-grown wines and this they do with great success. They opened their new air-conditioned Cellar Door in 2004 and inaugurated the VIP Club Members room in the same year. Another 'alfresco' tasting area was built in 2007 to take care of the influx of visitors to Ernest Hill.

The vineyard and all its facilities have glorious views of the Broken Back Ranges and Lovedale and are a delight to visit on their own.  Add the wonderful wines into the bargain and you have one of the greatest experiences to be had in the Hunter Valley.

Their Wine Club, called the Club Ernest, allows members to receive discounts on the wines and access to their  Museum wines. They also are given first access to their new wine releases.

Since the output of wines is comparitively small, sometimes as few as 50 cases, it makes good sense to become a member before stocks run out.
