About Bunnamagoo Estate Wines
Bunnamagoo Estate Wines are located in Rockley, New South Wales between Bathurst and Oberon. They have another vineyard at Eurunderee, in the Mudgee district. The company was once the Paspaley Pearling Company, but turned the pearls into wine and now take the same standard of care in their winemaking as they once did in their former profession.
The only difference in their approach with the wine growing is that they fully intend to keep their operations small and to specialise in producing individual traditionally-made wines.
The Central Tablelands area of New South Wales is one of the oldest wine regions in Australia, with a well-documented account of Adam Roth planting Chardonnay in 1858 in an area that actually forms part of the existing Eurunderee vineyard.
The vines are kept to a low yield in order to produce top quality fruit. The grapes are hand-picked and stored into small bins to preserve the first juice. Then the vigneron and his staff consult on the remaining grapes on the vine. Careful decisions are made before continuing to the next stage of the work. They discuss whether to use French or American oak barrels, and when and which they should be used. Then the wines are given time to mature and develop into the product that has made them famous.
Every aspect of the winemaking is taken with the public in mind. What matters most is the quality of the wine and this long-term philosophy is borne out by the fact the vintages usually sell out within a few months and are often hard to find.
Robert Black is the winemaker. He is a local lad and learned his wine-making skills in the Central Tablelands and also in France. He has considerable experience and uses a unique mix of ‘science, tradition, intuition and luck.’
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon and Shiraz are available on their web site. But don’t blink, or you’ll miss them.
