About Glenhoya Wines
Located in the cool climate region of New England Tablelands region of NSW, at Armidale on the Tamworth road, lies the Glenhoya Wines vineyard.
The area surrounding Armidale is unique in that the climate has a subtropical summer with prevalent rainfall, yet has a relatively mild summer because of its location and elevation. The region does, however, experience spring frosts and even snow at such an elevation, but the climate is conducive to the slow ripening of the grapes, which, in turn, makes for the creation of elegant, cool climate wines.
In 1997 and 1998, Rhine Riesling and Shiraz vines were planted at an elevation of 1040 metres, thus marking the beginnings of the vineyard. The first vintage in 2000 was released in 2001, after having secured their Vigneron's Off-Licence in November of that year. Both the licence and the production of Rhine Riesling wine was the first occasion that this had happened in the Armidale region.
The newly-picked grapes were shipped to the great Hunter Valley to be made into wine. Expansion was on the cards. Additional plantings took place in 2001on land adjacent to them. The vines selected were Rhine Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Then, in 2005, they planted some Viognier and brought the total to what is today at some 2,400 vines.
They have a Cellar Door, which is open every Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm., or you can give them a phone all to arrange a special visit at other times. They welcome groups and can also cater for small functions.
The tastings and sales are held in a relaxed garden setting and it is a delightful way to spend the day. The vineyard and Cellar Door are located next to the owner’s house.
Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Viognier are all available at their Cellar Door.
