About Great Lakes Wines
Great Lakes Wines are located on Herivals Road, Wootton, New South Wales. It is a family boutique winery, which has proved to be very popular in the Great Lakes region on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. The vineyard is owned and operated by Steve and Robyn, who, together with their two daughters, Lucy and Jemma, have made sure that their estate is a great place for wine lovers to visit, whether they be locals or travellers. They all enjoy the great wines and the peaceful environment at their Cellar Door.
Steve and Robyn have long had a mutual passion for wine. Steve worked in the wine industry as a young man, but had dreams of owning his own vineyard. When he and Robyn had the opportunity to buy their own vineyard and winery, they jumped at the chance. They are both hard workers and also love dealing with customers; chatting about wines to them and showing them around the property. Lucy and Jemma also help out at the Cellar Door, especially by entertaining the visitor’s children.
The first plantings at Great Lakes Wines took place in 1998. They chose varieties with great care; ones that were suited to the region and could withstand the harsh summer heat,
The fruit is hand-picked and the use of chemicals additives in the winemaking is kept to the barest minimum. Steve Attkins is the winemaker and he takes great care in the winemaking processes.
They harvest the white varieties in late January and the reds in early March. They use open fermenters and regular hand plunging for the reds. The plunging takes about a week, after which the filtering takes place, then the product is stored in stainless steel tanks. When appropriate, they use French oak. Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho are the varieties available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar Door. Come along and enjoy the hospitality. Steve, Robyn, Lucy and Jemma are all waiting to welcome you.
