About Monument Vineyard
Monument Vineyard can be found on Underwood Lane, Borenore, Orange, New South Wales. They are makers of wonderful wines.
When a group of five mature-age students who were studying at Charles Sturt University’s Viticulture and Wine Science got together in the 1990s, they came up with the concept of Monument Vineyard. Each was successful in his own business at the time, but the call of the vine beckoned them all.
They each were serious in their desire to become professionally involved in winemaking. So, by pooling their resources, they were able to achieve this ‘monumental’ goal. The Cana Viticulture Partnership was formed in which each of the partners had direct managerial control in the company.
The members of the partnership learned of land that was available in Cudal, about thirty kilometres west of Orange. They were premium blocks and one of the first to be settled in the region. The district is honoured by a monument to Sir Thomas Mitchell, whose starting point for his various expeditions of South East Australia began here.
The land was well drained and covered with volcanic Terra Rossa soil over limestone, with a ready supply of ground water. This was the perfect place to begin their venture, and thus Monument Vineyard became a reality.
They planted the first 50 hectares of vines in 1999 and over the next few years increased this to 108 hectares. They also set aside an experimental block to test new varieties, clones, root stocks and viticulture techniques.
The first vintage came in 2000 and was excellent in quality for such a generally difficult growing year elsewhere. Subsequent vintages were even better and 90% were sold under contract to several selected wineries. The remainder was made into wines at the vineyard and sold under the Monument Vineyard label.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne, Merlot, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Roussanne, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Shiraz, Verdelho and Viognier are the superb wines available at their cellar Door.
