About Pygmy Hill Estate
Pygmy Hill Estate is located at 'The Farmhouse' 250 Bangadilly Road,
Canyonleigh, New South Wales. It is owned by the Brazenor family, who established the vineyard in 1993.
In 1994 they built a five-bedroom guest house and christened it ‘The Farmhouse’. Then, in 1996, they planted their first 2000 vines; a Chardonnay. They also named the vineyard Pygmy Hill Estate in honour of the son, Andrew, who passed away, and whose nickname was ‘Pygmy’.
By 1997 they had planted 600 Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which were four-year-old vines transplanted from Kevin Howard's vineyard ‘Howards Lane’ at Mittagong.
Their first vintage came in 1999 and produced 540 bottles of Chardonnay and 400 bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon. They both displayed intense fruit flavours. Their products have continued to improve over the years and are indeed excellent cool climate wines.
They hand pick the grapes at Pygmy Hill Estate and the fruit they produce is very high in quality with distinct fruit-driven flavours, created by the terroir of Southern Highlands. The unique micro-climate of Canyonleigh is one of the major factors in their being able to create such wonderful wines.
The other major factor in this equation is their dedicated viticultural practice. They only need to slash between the rows twice a year; once in mid season and the other the day before harvest. With the soil being of a rich flint and rainfall very low, the fruit has very little disease and is always full intense flavour.
The fruit is picked by hand each vintage by a small army of family, friends and neighbours, after which they celebrate with a big meal and lots of liquid refreshments, including their wines and the odd beer, or three.
They then send the grapes to Mundrakoona Estate, where Anton Balog, the winemaker, turns them into excellent Pygmy Hill wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are available on their web site.
