About Topper's Mountain Wines
Topper's Mountain Wines is located on Guyra Road, Tingha, New South Wales. It is close to Inverell in northern NSW and lies at an altitude of around 900 metres above sea level. It is on the western rim of the New England Tablelands.
The vineyard lies on deep, red volcanic soils and overlooks the MacIntyre River. Topper's Mountain’s southern boundary stands between the Gwydir River in the south and the MacIntyre River in the north.
Topper's Mountain’s name presumably comes from E and W Topper, two brothers who worked for George Wyndham in the 1850s. George Wyndham was the owner ‘New Valley Station’, which included the area we know today as Topper’s Mountain.
The vineyard, Topper’s Mountain, is owned by Will, Richard and Mark Kirkby and Peter & Jenni Birch. From the first planting of 1.1 hectares in 2000, they have now expanded to 10 hectares, most of which was planted in 2002.
Many people think that the New England area is a relatively new wine region, but that in fact is quite erroneous. The area was indeed a grape-growing region as far back as the first settlers. With the hardships brought about by the difficulties of transport, squatters and settlers planted vines and made their own wine. George Wyndham was one of the most prominent of these early vignerons. His vineyard grew to ten hectares of vines by 1870 and produced up to 11,000 gallons of Wyndham Estate wines each year.
Most of the vineyards in today’s New England area are situated above 1,000 metres above sea level. It is in fact classified as a cool-climate wine region, which means that the grapes ripen slowly. This slow ripening allows the grapes to develop their flavours and deepen the colour.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinotage, Tannat, Touriga, Nebbiolo, Barbera, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz, Tempranillo, Traminer and Viognier are the wonderful range of wines available at their Cellar Door.
