About Vicarys Winery
Vicary's Winery is located on Northern Road, Luddenham, New South Wales. It is an estate with a long history. It was originally part of a land grant made by John Blaxland, the grandson of Gregory Blaxland, who first settled the area. He named the property ‘Luddenham’ in remembrance of his home village in England.
Quite a number of the original buildings still exist on the property, including the farmhouse, which was built around 1860 and the woolshed, built before 1890. The land was first used for sheep and cattle, with the wool from the sheep being exported to England.
Cecil Vicary took over the property in 1916 and changed the whole thrust of the estate. He converted the woolshed to a dairy and created the vineyard in 1918. In 1923, the first wines were made and the winery began trading as a wine business.
Today, the estate is owned by Chris Niccol, a Roseworthy Graduate Winemaker, who once worked at the famous Minchinbury winery at Rooty Hill, as well a number of other wineries throughout Australia.
Chris brought in his Heron's Wing range of wines in 1996 and then, in 1999, offered the first ‘Kosher’ wines to the Jewish market. His wines have won much acclaim throughout Australia and he has won awards and medals at various national wine shows.
Vicarys Winery and Woolshed endeavour to maintain a link to the early beginnings of the Australian Wine and Wool Industry. They do this by holding Vicary's Famous Woolshed Dance every Friday and Saturday night, which is a fun way to visit the past.
They converted Vicarys Famous Woolshed Dance in the late 1970s, but kept many of the artefacts of the bygone era. It has that old-world atmosphere and is a hoot to experience. A new sprung wooden dance floor was installed and there are also large open fires to keep you snug during the winter months.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Semillon and Shiraz are all available at their Cellar Door.
