About Warrumbungle Wines
Warrumbungle Wines are located at South Burloo, Oxley Highway,
Coonabarabran, New South Wales. It is a spectacular place to visit, with its 13 million year old volcanic remnants rising out of the dense bushland, including the world famous ‘Breadknife’, a towering jagged rock that stands proudly in the wilderness.
A giant telescope sits high on one of the tallest peaks in the Warrumbungles, which explains why the nearby town of Coonabarabran has the sobriquet of the ‘Astronomy Capital of Australia’.
The vineyard was established in 1998 and vines were planted in the rich volcanic soils. It was a hunch that was the catalyst for trying out this remote area, one that turned out to be a stroke of genius. The region is high in altitude, it has plenty of sunshine and reliable rainfall. The air is clean and fresh and it is a magnet for tourist.
The terroir is perfect for growing quality grapes of superb complexity and depth. The proprietors are in fact surprised that this wine region is such a well-kept secret; but in truth, they really don’t mind. Perhaps its very remoteness is the reason that the area does not show up on the usual viticultural searches.
Warrumbungle Wines is a small boutique winery whose owners are proud to say that conventional methods are not necessarily for them and they constantly push the envelope in their winemaking processes. This includes the daring step of setting up a vineyard in an hitherto unknown region. They also experiment with their wines in an endeavour to extract the finest possible varieties and blends to ‘unlock the myriad of sensual possibilities sealed inside the skin of the humble grape.’ A noble sentiment indeed.
The vineyard runs to some ten hectares, set on a free standing hill and lies at an altitude of between 630 and 660 metres above sea level.
Chambourcin, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, Tempranillo, and Viognier are all available on their web site.
