About Westend Estate
Westend Estate is located at 1283 Brayne Road, Griffith, New South Wales. It was established by Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria in 1927, shortly after they came here from Italy. They bought a five-acre block at the Western end of Griffith in the Riverina region of New South Wales.
The winery was first known as Calabria Wines, but now that it is owned by their son, Bill, a new name was called for. He saw the need to bring the business to a more modern setting and this included the name change to Westend Estate Wines. It also ushered in an increase in quality and range of wines to meet growing demand.
It was a happy circumstance that, with the changes, success followed soon after. Westend Estate Wines have won many medals and trophies from major Australian and International Wine Shows. They were among the first in the Riverina to win gold medals for their wines, in particular, their reds. Westend Estate was established in 1945 and their aim still remains to this day to ‘deliver unique and memorable wines with honour and passion.’
The whole family is involved in the vineyard, with the third generation, in the form of Bill's three sons, Frank, Michael and Andrew and daughter, Elizabeth, all lending a hand.
Bill supervises all the day-to-day activities in the vineyard and winery. He believes that a small crush makes for a greater concentration of quality. The result is that the wines produced are of a very high standard; which is only to be expected of from Westend Estate.
Bill Calabria, with his talented team, including winemakers Bryan Currie and Sally Whittaker, have been awarded over thirty trophies since 2000 at National and Regional Wine Shows across Australia and internationally.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Grenache, Merlot, Durif, St Macaire, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Shiraz, Traminer, Verdelho and Viognier are all available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar Door.
