About Yerong Creek Estate

Yerong Creek Estate is located at 'Barwon', Yerong Creek, New South Wales in the Riverina wine district. They are producers of high quality wines.

It was in 1996 that the first vines were planted, but they were almost wiped out when a bushfire ravaged the vineyard in 1997 and destroyed 90% of the vines, the drip watering system and most of the wooden posts.

Family and friends all lent a hand to restore the vineyard by building a new drip watering system and re-planting the vines and nursing the surviving vines back to health.

The spirit at Yerong Creek Estate is high and they are driven by a passion for fine wines. This family-owned winery in southern New South Wales is now producing some of the Riverina's most sought-after labels.

After the near disaster of the bushfire, the recovery came quickly and in

February 2000 they harvested, all by hand, a half tonne of Chardonnay

and one tonne of Shiraz. The grapes used for these particular wines were

actually the ones that survived the fire.

Paul Robey from Walla Walla is the winemaker and he helped the family considerably in the recovery programme with the winemaking, bottling and labelling.

The Cofield family was also engaged in 2001 as Yerong Creek Estate's contract winemaker. This coincided with their first big vintage was 2001 when almost ten tonnes of Chardonnay and Shiraz were harvested.

The 2002 vintage was also pretty good, though not as big as the previous year, due to an excess of rain. They fermented half of the harvest in stainless steel tanks to produce the very popular fruity Alice Lillian, a ‘not so dry’ wine and the other half was fermented in French oak to create a dry chardonnay with its natural acidity and oak flavours.

Various vintages of Chardonnay and Shiraz can be found at their Cellar Door, so why not take a trip out to the Riverina and call in?
