About Blue Metal Vineyard
Blue Metal Vineyard is located in one of Australia’s newest premium high altitude, cool climate wine growing regions. The Southern Highlands of NSW is fast becoming famous as a great wine-producing region. It lies about 120 kilometres south-west of Sydney and has fifteen Cellar Doors and Food and Wine trail for visitors to enjoy.
The area is surrounded by three extinct volcanoes: Mount Gibraltar, Mount Jellore and Mount Misery. This makes the soil predominantly made up of basaltic lavas and is comprised of deep red to brown clay loams that drain well. The region has been used for many years as grazing land and for the growing of orchards.
It is believed that vines were planted in this region as early as the 1820s, but the modern-day vineyards really were only established in 1983. However, there are now over 250 hectares planted to vines in this burgeoning region.
The Blue Metal Vineyard consists of twenty-six acres, sited on Hurdle Ridge and lies at 790 metres above sea level. The area is covered in basalt rock, which in Australia is known as blue metal, which explains the name of the winery. The soils are rich and fertile, making this vineyard just about perfect for the production of great wines.
The wines are all made from their own fruit. Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier are their white varieties planted and their reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese.
The owners, Alex and Sam Scott, actually live in England, but have close family connections in Australia. They also have a passion for wine and winemaking. They purchased the property in 1999 and planted the vines in the same year. Now, Sam’s sister, Louise Horsley, runs the vineyard and takes care of the management and marketing of their wines.
At their Cellar Door, you’ll meet Chris Atkinson, who will be only too happy to let you sample their range of wines, which include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Gris, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier.
