About McVitty Grove
The Phillips family bought McVitty Grove Vineyard, on the Wombeyan Caves Road, just out of Mittagong and planted 5.5 hectares to vine on the on 42 hectares of farm land. They saw the potential of the land and decided that it was perfect for their plans to make wine and also grow olives.
The vines are situated at the front of the estate, planted in deep, fertile soil, with lots of life-giving sunshine. The high altitude and the aspect combine to make this vineyard ideal for producing premium quality fruit.
They have planted Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, which is already producing excellent fruit and have also planted 1.5 hectares of olives. They also have a Cellar Door which has delightful views and a café, too, for the convenience of their visitors.
McVitty Grove Vineyard have become specialists in the production of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, to which these varietals are particularly suited to the area and climate. They have had much success from their special wines and continue to keep the tradition flourishing.
Their exemplary vineyard management and fruit development is one of the major factors in their being able to produce such outstanding wines. Their viticulturalist, Andrew Stewart, is another major factor, too. He ensures that the vines are restricted to a low yield and the use of chemical intervention is kept to the barest minimum. These measures mean that the grapes develop their own unique flavours and characters.
They also took great care in selecting their winemaker. Nick Spencer, who once worked at Madew Wines in Canberra, has had tremendous success in producing award winning wines for McVitty Grove.
While Nick has now moved on, he still gives valuable overseeing advice, as Geofrey continues to manage the winemaking.
Come along to their Cellar Door and sample their very special Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir and also their Shiraz.
