About Mundrakoona Estate
Mundrakoona Estate is located on Sir Charles Moses Lane, Old Hume Highway, Mittagong, New South Wales. It is a family-owned-and-operated cool climate vineyard and winery in the heart of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.
What was once a rough bush block of land with a dilapidated house on it was turned into a modern vineyard and boutique winery by the considerable efforts of the Balog family.
The name ‘Mundrakoona’ was a name made up by the eldest daughter, Mary-Kate, when she was younger and means a ‘magical place to play’ - her ‘Shangri-La.’
Josef Balog, an artisan blacksmith in his former life in Austria, and born in one of that country’s wine areas, actually constructed the tanks used in the winery, as well as other tools and implements that were needed on the property.
Visitors to the vineyard will often see Josef sweating away at the forge where he makes traditional decorative iron works. His wonderful pieces are on sale at the winery.
Barbara, his wife, runs the Cellar Door sales and promotion and takes a keen interest in the local wine industry. She is also a past President of the Southern Highlands Vignerons Association.
Anton, their eldest son, is the winemaker at Mundrakoona Estate and young though he may be, he has a wealth of experience, both in Australia and in Europe. He has already found success and acclaim with the wines he has made under the Mundrakoona Estate label.
His brother, Mark, is the viticulturist and assists with the harvesting and maintaining the vineyard. He also has his own viticulture business servicing vineyards in the area.
The two daughters, Mary-Kate and Anna, also take a strong interest in the winery.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Tempranillo are the range of wines available at their Cellar Door.
