About Pulpit Rock Estate

Pulpit Rock Estate is located at Lots 2 & 6 Wombeyan Caves Road Bullio, via Mittagong, New South Wales. It is owned by Carol-Ann and Philip Martin.

Carol-Ann has been occupied as a wine wholesaler for almost thirty years and is well known as a connoisseur of all fine wines. She confers with their winemaker, Rhys Eather, to make sure that the wine is made to her high standards. She is also responsible for the marketing of the wines.

Phillip, an architect by profession, is the vineyard manager and handles all the viticultural decisions. He caught the wine bug from his wife and is now an enthusiast.

They have a unique approach to their winemaking. Their philosophy is to produce rare and exceptional wines, by bringing together the unique characteristics of the vineyard, the skills of the viticulturalist, the talents of the winemaker, and their passion ‘for wine and life.’

Pulpit Rock Estate runs to some ninety hectares, of which four hectares was planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1998. It lies at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level and is around 150 kilometres south west of Sydney.

The vineyard is located 150km south west of Sydney and the soil is stony, with occasional patches of porphyry bedrock scattered around.

The vines, in rows three metres apart, are grown on a high steel VSP trellis to allow the leaves and fruit full exposure to sunshine.

It was after advice and a careful inspection by renowned viticulturalist Dr Richard Smart that the vineyard was established. He was enthusiastic about the potential of the land and its ability to produce the finest cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay table wines.

Their philosophy on viticulture is one of ‘low intervention’.  They believe that the vines should be allowed to grow naturally for the wine to be able to express their distinctive terroir.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are available on their web site.
