About Bungawarra Wines
Situated near Stanthorpe in the beautiful Ballandean area of Queensland’s Granite Belt is the small winery of Bungawarra. It is in fact just 20 kilometres south of Stanthorpe and 20 kilometres north of the Queensland/New South Wales border.
Established in the 1920s by a post-war migrant worker, Angelo Barbagallo, who stayed for over fifty years, it quickly developed a reputation amongst nearby Italian communities for producing fine wine. Since Angelo’s retirement, the new owners of Bungawarra have ensured that the reputation continues to flourish.
Underpinning everything at Bungawarra (it means “granite rock by shallow water”) is the belief that the best-flavoured wine comes from the best naturally produced fruits. A tremendous amount of effort is put into this aspect as the winery deals with whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at the grapes.
As a complete boutique winery, the estate carries out each and every phase of wine manufacture, from fruit production, using sustainable agricultural practices, to bottling.
Today there is a current planting of 5.5 hectares, which includes a number of vines: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Chardonnay, Semillon, Traminer and the Muscat vines introduced by Angelo over 80 years ago.
There is a broad selection of wines available red and white, sweet or dry, a Port and the “fabled” Liqueur Muscat. Currently, the 2006 Shiraz and the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon are available and selling well, as is the winery’s first Moscato (con brio) with its “beautiful floral aromas and a touch of sweetness.” It is also possible to taste before purchase from the cellar door, although it must be noted that Bungawarra wines do have a habit of selling out!
The winery is open from 10am to 4pm and there are barbecue and picnic facilities available, although bookings are required for large tour-groups and coaches.
