About Catspaw Farm

Situated just west of Stanthorpe on a 330 acre site is the charmingly named Catspaw Farm Winery. Purchased in 1989 by current owners Chris and Leonie Whitfort, it was a rundown sheep property which was gradually developed for horticulture. It now boasts 15 acres of grapes of which there are 12 varieties and 4 acres of apples with sheep roaming on the remaining land which is mainly native vegetation.

The farm also has a self-contained 3 bedroom cottage – Tobermory’s Lodge. Sleeping 8 people, it offers views over the dams, disabled access, fishing for guests, basket breakfast, TV and video, cd/cassette player and barbecue facilities.

Not only does Catspaw Farm boast a wide selection of wines, but also a wide range of wildlife. Roaming the land are many species of kangaroos, wallabies and possums and, if visitors are lucky, they may just get to spot an echidna, bats or koalas. There is also an abundance of birds and the large dams on the farm attract a plethora of water birds, including ducks and occasionally black swans and pelicans.

There is an array of vintages currently available, namely: Chardonnay 2001 which drinks well with Asian cuisine and seafood; Chambourcin 2000 which has some added Shiraz to enhance the back palate; Cabernet Shiraz 1998 which is suitable for cellaring for 2-3 years and Shiraz Merlot 2001, a worthy accompaniment to venison, duck and Bolognese pastas . Apple juice is also available at the cellar door.

The tasting room is open 10am to 5pm from Thursday to Sunday. It is also open on public holidays and for 7 days in the school holidays although it is closed December through to February except by appointment.
