About Pyramids Road Wines

Situated at an elevation of 746 metres and just a twenty-minute drive from Stanthorpe and Tenterfield is Pyramids Road Wines, owned by Warren and Sue Smith.

Pyramids Road itself runs through the Girraween National Park, which includes a number of spectacular natural features, two of which are huge granite outcrops known as “The Pyramids.”

In November 1999, a two-hectare vineyard was planted.  This produced its first crop in 2002, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Mourvedre, Shiraz and Verdelho.  To strengthen this range, there has also been the revival of a seventy-year-old patch of Muscat.

The winery is a small-scale operation and the pruning, training, picking, basket pressing, bottling and labelling are generally hands on activities.  Customers are welcome to join in the picking and crushing of the grapes with vintage usually beginning in March although an accurate timing is impossible to give, as the readiness of the fruit is the crucial factor here.  Lunch is provided at the cellar door and all participants receive a well-earned free T-shirt as proof of their hard work.

For those who prefer something less strenuous, there is a year round opportunity to be involved with the bottling of wines.  This provides the chance to add your label to your very own bottle without the hard work!

Their wines include: 2007 Verdelho, 2005 Cabernet Merlot, 2005 Bernies Blend, 2006 Shiraz, Wattlebird Red and Mistella.

The cellar door’s (previously a dance hall and packing shed) opening times are Thursday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. although this is extended to every day during the school holidays and all public holidays.  Appointments outside these times can be made by contacting the winery.  Tour groups are also welcome.
