About Rumbalara Estate
Situated close to Stanthorpe in Queensland’s Granite Belt region is Rumbalara Estate Wines. With its cellar door located just 1 kilometre from the New England highway, it offers an ideal stop for any tour of the area.
The land now known as Rumbalara was first surveyed prior to 1908. When the rail link between Sydney and Brisbane was being built, an intrusion of silver bearing quartz was discovered. This led to the approval of a mining lease, which saw part of the land being occupied by miners as they went about their daily business.
The first grapes were planted on the property in 1928 although the land had previously been used as an orchard from the time of the initial survey.
Bob and Una Gray bought the property back in 1974. One of their first moves was to plant and graft classic wine grape varieties onto existing rootstocks.
In December 2002, Mike and Bobbi Cragg bought Rumbalara from the Grays. Mike is the estate’s winemaker and he concentrates on producing easy drinking, fruity, aromatic wines. Some grapes are bought in from other Granite Belt neighbours but all the wine is made on site.
The Rumbalara logo is an eclectic mix of African totem shapes and Australian Aboriginal line work and dotting mimickings. It not only symbolises Rumbalara’s innovative approach but also reflects the African-born Australian origins of its owners. A half-day ‘African Rhythm and Reds On Tap’ event takes place in November 2008.
The wines include: Phoenix White, Phoenix Red, Granitegolde, Safari Red, Fletcher’s Cutting, Merlot 2006, Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Shiraz 2006, Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Regiment a tawny port, Squadron Port a white port and the limited releases, Bob4Bob and Rendezvous Rosé.
The cellar door is open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm with booked groups welcome.
