About Captain's Paddock
The vineyard known as Captain's Paddock is located on Millers Road, Kingaroy, in the South Burnett Region of Queensland. It gets its name from their horse, ‘Captain Jack’, who lived to the ripe old age of 38 and was often seen wandering around the vineyard to his heart’s content. Now, a red Kelpie called ‘Merlot’ rules the roost and she loves visitors. Check your vehicle before leaving, because Merlot might just have hitched a ride.
The McCallum family built the vineyard and buildings. Don and Judy created a delightful property which features many useful items for working the property created by their son, Stuart.
Maryanne and Peter Pidcock settled down on the vineyard in 2002, which also incorporates a Cellar Door, a café and a Bed and Breakfast for visitors who wish to stay over for a night or three.
Maryanne Pidcock owns and runs the estate. She and her husband, Peter, moved away from the rush of Sydney and involved themselves totally in both the wine and tourism industries.
Maryanne is the current President of the Queensland Wine Industry Association and is an advocate for the Queensland College of Wine Tourism in the Granite Belt. She is also is a member of the Wide Bay Burnett Area Consultative Committee and gets herself involved in many other local and regional organisations. She is one busy lady.
The first vines were planted in 1995 and runs to ten acres, made up thus: 5 acres of Chardonnay, 4.5 acres of Shiraz and 0.5 acres of Merlot. The vineyard is covered in rich volcanic soil, which gives the grapes a most distinctive flavour. All their wine is made from grapes grown in their own vineyard.
Enjoy a Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz or a Verdelho at their Cellar Door, or on the verandah looking out over the Booie Range. Or, in winter, sit by The Booie monster fire place to warm the cockles of your heart and your toes!
