About Dusty Hill Wines
Dusty Hill Wines are located on Waterview Drive, Moffatdale, via Murgon, in the South Burnett region of Queensland. The property is owned by Frank and Margaretha Prendergast and they are producers of excellent wines.
Frank and Margaretha ran a successful childcare and a building business, respectively, on the Sunshine Coast, before giving it all up to move to South Burnett.
It was their friends who already had a vineyard in South Burnett who influenced them to make the move. Frank and Margaretha used to visit them with their two children and go rowing on Lake Barambah. One look at the Dusty Hill property was enough to convince them to up stumps and begin a new way of life.
The whole area was ideal and matched their dreams to a tee. They were intent upon producing quality wines in a beautiful rural setting with lakes and mountains in a region that is arguably the best wine growing region in Queensland.
They bought the property in 1996. Father and son, Joe, moved to the estate first and lived in a tent in the winter! They began with Frank starting the building and Joe planting the vines. Seven years of drought preceded them and the name, ‘Dusty Hill’ seemed the perfect sobriquet for the place.
Joe planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Muscat, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho. These were the varieties the family like to drink, so it was a very good choice, because the region is very much suited to the growing of these vines.
The vineyard now runs to 17 acres and features the Tasting Room, Molly's Café, Jacaranda Cottage overlooking Lake Barambah and an old that was restored barn, which they use for banquets.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Muscat Gordo Blanco, Semillon, Shiraz and Verdelho are all available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar Door.
