About Kancoona Valley Wines

Kancoona Valley Wines are located on Morgan's Creek Road,
Kancoona, South Victoria. They are makers of superb preservative-free wines.

The vineyard is situated in a mountain valley around twelve kilometres from the Kiewa River, approximately halfway between Myrtleford and Mount Beauty in the Alpine Valleys wine region.

The location of the vineyard is ideal for the production of high quality grapes. The high altitude makes it a cool-climate region, which means that the grapes ripen slowly, allowing the fruit to develop in flavour, intensity and colour. The fresh breezes that flow up from the Kiewa River Valley far below keep the air clean and the vines free from disease, thus obviating the need for using chemical sprays. Indeed, they do not use any insecticides at all at Kancoona Valley Wines.

Joseph and Lena Birti own and operate Kancoona Valley Vineyard and Winery. They work extremely hard and put their considerable skills to great use to make wines that are of excellent quality; wines that are made without using sulphur dioxide or any other preservatives.

Joseph and Lena decided that they would cease using corks for their bottles and now use the more efficient screw caps. They believe, as most people in the industry now do, that screw caps are the best way to maintain consistent quality and lengthen the shelf life of the wines.

They make small quantities of hand-crafted wines from premium grapes grown on their own estate. The whole terroir of their special region is the perfect setting for growing the very best quality grapes.

It was in 1989 that the Kancoona Valley vineyard was established. The first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. Merlot was added later. But it was not until 1999 that they began actually making the wines and released their first Cabernet Sauvignon. Then, in 2000, they also released their Pinot Noir.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are now available at their Cellar Door.
