About Smiths Vineyard Beechworth
Smiths Vineyard Beechworth is located on Croom Lane (off Diffey Road), Beechworth, Victoria. It looks out over the Mt Buffalo and the Victorian High Country and is the oldest vineyard in the Beechworth wine region.
They have a policy of minimum interference in their viticultural practices and ‘let the vineyard do the talking’. Their aim is to create wines that reflect the unique regional qualities by using traditional techniques, but with a modern bent.
Beechworth lies at 550 metres above sea level and has consistent warm days and cool nights, which produce fruit of exceptional quality with wonderful balance and elegance.
Their Cellar Door was designed by Kate Lilford-Smith, from local sandstone acquired by Pete and Di Smith shortly after they moved to the estate thirty years ago. A stylised depiction of the building is used as their logo and on their labels. They are open to the public on weekends and public holidays, and at other times by appointment.
Their 2006 Chardonnay is the outstanding success of this vintage and their first Beechworth Shiraz is a superb wine. So, too, are the 2005 Cabernet Merlot and the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Every wine produced at Beechworth is a single vineyard wine. The 2006 Chardonnay has wonderful hints of citrus, melon and stonefruit and great length. It is very well structured, with natural acid and is a great reflection of the ageing vines and of the region.
Their Cabernet Merlot has a smooth velvety spice palate, with suggestions of blueberries and cassis and a hint of semi-dried tomatoes.
Keep an eye out for their premium single vineyard Shiraz which will be released soon. It promises to be something very special and will undoubtably win many awards. This wine will sell out quickly, so it behooves you to get in early.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz are the wines available at their Cellar door.
