About Sorrenberg Vineyard
Sorrenberg Vineyard can be found on Croom Lane (off Diffey Road),
Beechworth, Victoria. It is owned by Barry and Jan Morey and they produce excellent wines from this noted region of Beechworth.
The vineyard runs to 2.5 hectares, with Stony Creek running across the back boundary and forest on two sides. They chose this site for its cool climate and granitic soil, together with the fact that it lies on a north-facing slope with good drainage and cleansing breezes. The terroir is such that the grapes ripen slowly, but develop intense and complex flavours, with great colour.
They use close planting with single fruiting wire and foliage wire to gain exposure for the berries. They planted their first vines in 1989, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gamay and Sauvignon Blanc. They also added smaller quantities of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Semillon.
Most the wines are made from grapes grown at the vineyard and processed on site by traditional methods. They use French Barriques for the fermentation. The 2007 vintage produced very little fruit at Sorrenberg and it was necessary to source additional fruit from the cool climate area of Tumbarumba.
The yield at Sorrenberg Vineyard is relatively low by design and this gives them the opportunity to devote all their attention to creating wines of the very best quality, with maximal flavours and intensity.
There is a 500-year history of winemaking in the Barzen family, beginning in Germany in the Mosel River district. Barry Barzen’s grandfather, Jacob, came to Australia and worked on a vineyard and winery at Dookie.
The vineyard gets its name from a vineyard which is owned by the Barzen family near a town called Reil on the Mosel in Germany.
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Gamay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are the wonderful wines available at their Cellar Door.
