About Yengari

The Yengari vineyard is located on High Street (Calder Highway),
Taradale, Victoria. They are makers of excellent wines and have many other strings to their bow.

The proprietor and winemaker, Tony Lacy, tasted his first wine, a 1965 Pinot Noir from Burgundy, when he was in London. It set him on a journey to Europe, where he studied viticulture and winemaking. Burgundy, the Rhone Valley and Condrieu were particularly of interest to him, as he searched for the secret of their success.

On his return to Australia in 1994, he worked for Rutherglen as an assistant winemaker at the Mount Prior Vineyard. He also completed a wine science correspondence course during this time. Within two years he was promoted to winemaker and vineyard manager and his wines won two gold medals in the Rutherglen Wine Show open classes and a Gold and Trophy for his 1998 Merlot in the 1999 Cowra Wine Show.

When he was ready to start up his own vineyard, he looked for a cooler climate area than the one at Rutherglen and eventually settled on the slopes of Beechworth in Victoria's North East Valleys.

His first vines of Shiraz and Viognier were planted in 2002, but the first harvest won’t be until 2014. Great wine takes time. His ‘Yengari’ label release came in 2005, made with fruit sourced from boutique family-owned vineyards from premium wine regions that exemplified the same terroir as his vineyard.

There are three main levels to the Yengari wine portfolio: the Yengari Reserve, Yengari Single Vineyard and Yengari Organic. They also have Garden Street, Green Ant and a Cellar Door preservative-free range.

Yengari opened their Cellar Door in central Victoria, in the old gold rush town of Taradale, which is on the way to Castlemaine and Bendigo. Here you can sample their Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Verdelho and Viognier.
