About Cannibal Creek Vineyard

Located in the foothills of the Black Snake Ranges in the West Gippsland region of Victoria lies the estate known as Cannibal Creek Vineyard. They are producers of traditional-style, premium wine, where the grapes are hand-picked and the wines crafted with tremendous care and a minimum of handling.

Like many new winegrowers, they started out with naïve ideas of growing a few grapes and then sitting back to enjoy the fruits (literally and figuratively) of their labours. That it didn’t pan out this way is hardly surprising, but it is a mark of their love of the grape that they kept going and turned their little venture into a thriving business.

They planted two hectares each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on the foothills of Tynong North. The granite-covered slopes are covered in rich soils which have good drainage and lots of life-giving sunshine. The grapes ripen early here and are of a very high quality. In 1998, they planted an additional hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

Cannibal Creek is a tributary of the Bunyip River and marks the eastern boundary of the property. The name ‘Cannibal Creek’ appears to be a corruption of the name of the area that was once a pastoral selection of Crown land called 'Connabul Run'. Although, it is fun to speculate as to how the name really evolved!

Careful canopy management and pruning is a great part of their viticultural preparation. Production is deliberately limited to around two tonnes per acre, to ensure that the fruit is of premium quality. They use traditional wine making techniques and use only top quality imported French barriques. Their philosophy is that ‘making fine wine demands time and attention to detail at every stage.’

Come along to their Cellar Door and sample or buy from their range of excellent wines, which includes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
