About Clair De Lune
The estate known as Clair de Lune takes its name from the beautiful musical piece by Claude Debussy and means ‘Light of the Moon’. It is the inspiration for the owners of the estate, whose aims are very much like the beautiful timeless and enduring quality of the music. Their wines, too, have a timeless quality to them with great finesse and elegance.
The vineyard was established in 1997 on the hills of the Strzelecki Ranges of South Gippsland in Victoria. The estate runs to a total of twelve hectares, with four hectares planted to vines. It features three different soil types, each with different aspects and regional variations, which makes for a wide diversity and style of wines.
Brian Gaffy, the winemaker, prefers to let the wines fare on their own as much as possible and does not believe in intervention where it is not necessary. His aim is to bring out the original terroir in his wines and this he achieves by the careful management of the vineyard and their viticultural practices. The result is a fruit that is of superior quality and rich in flavour and colour.
They use a minimalist approach to their grape growing, with the barest minimum use of chemical intervention. The wines that they make from these carefully nurtured grapes present with unique character and flavour.
The vineyard is really a boutique winery, where all the wines are hand-crafted in traditional methods. The grapes are carefully pressed by hand to maintain the optimum flavour and quality of the wine.
The ‘Bacchus Bar’ Cellar Door, named for the Roman God of Wine and Revelry, is the place where visitors can sample such delights as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.
Come along and be served by the winemaker himself, who will gladly tell you anything you want to know about the very special wines they have available for tasting.
