About Brumby Wines
Brumby Wines is located on Cannon Lane, Wood Wood, Victoria, on the banks of Murray River, some people say, ‘the mighty Murray River’. They sit happily among other great vineyards in the largest grape growing area of Australia and specialise in varietal grapes.
It was in 1996 that the vineyard was established on part of the family farm ‘Sandyanna’, in the Swan Hill wine region. The area is blessed with wonderful soils and a temperate climate, which are ideal for making their special wines.
Brumby Wines have a superb range of traditional Swan Hill regional wines and have been accepted with alacrity in both Australia and in overseas markets.
The brand name, Brumby Wines, was established in 2001, the vineyard in 1996. There are thirty-five acres planted to vines, which include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Durif and Shiraz.
They use trellises to catch the sunlight and careful hand-pruning and canopy management. Irrigation completes the preparation to produce a low yield, with high quality flavours and aromatics.
The history of Brumby begins in the early 1880s, when Sergeant James Brumby arrived in Australia with the Third Fleet. He was granted land in New South Wales, where he grazed cattle and horses. He was later posted to Tasmania and let the horses free to roam the bush land and thus the term ‘brumby’ was coined.
The brumby of today is a tough horse that wanders the outback and is the official name for the Australian wild horse. It has survived and indeed thrived, despite many attempts to eradicate it as a pest. But it is a survivor and seems able to withstand any threat against its existence.
Brumby Wines, too, is a survivor and tough as teak in the market place, both locally and overseas.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Durif and Shiraz are the excellent wines that visitors can sample at their Cellar Door.
