About Bulga Wine Estates

Brothers William and Albert Ward were among the first settlers in the Bulga Region, having arrived in the area with nothing more than ten pounds and a load of courage. The year was 1893 and they set about clearing the land around a watering hole and set up their home. The road that the property lies on is now called the Bulga Road.

The Ward Family still lives on Bulga Road, which lies west of Swan Hill, Victoria, where they remain committed to producing superior wines and innovative ideas of winemaking.

Through many droughts, two World Wars, the depression, the rise and fall of the Riverboat trade, the Ward family has carried on, some say battled on, to keep the tradition of making fine wine alive and well.

They are indeed themselves as much a part of the landscape as the ‘oasis’ of gums and the watering hole dug out by Albert Ward in 1928 with a bullock and plough. Their combined ‘can do’ attitude and easy approach to life affects all that they do, right down to the production of the wines, to their customer service. At Bulga, they give to their customers a ‘high quality yet relaxed wine drinking experience.’

The ‘oasis’ of gums and the watering hole are featured on the company’s logo. It is an aerial view and is an inspired piece of artwork.

They believe in the concept of a low yield, high quality output at Bulga Wine Estates, to ensure that the Shiraz fruit ripens early in order to reach an optimum result. John Ellis of Hanging Rock Winery is their winemaker, whose considerable knowledge led to their winning a Bronze Medal at the Australian Inland Wine Show in October 2001at its first competition and repeated the following year.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Colombard, Dolcetto and Shiraz are the varieties available at their Cellar Door. Take a trip out to this delightful winery and have yourself a great day out.
