About Duke's Vineyard

Duke's Vineyard is located on Porongurup Road, on the fringe of the Porongurup Ranges in Mount Barker, Western Australia. The estate also has spectacular views of the Stirling Ranges. It truly is a place with a ‘million dollar view for you to take in while sampling some of Duke's award winning red and white wines,’ as they say at the vineyard.

Hilde and Ian (Duke) Ranson established the vineyard with faint hopes of enjoying a relaxing retirement after their long years in the clothing manufacturing business. But hard workers soon adapt and the back-breaking setting up of the vineyard was just what the retirement doctor ordered.

They are both devotees of Riesling and now it was the perfect time to begin making their own. Along with the Riesling, they also grew Cabernet and Shiraz to round out their portfolio of Great Southern wines.

It was their belief that the quality of the Porongurup wines had improved so much over the last decade or so as to be on par with the best German wines. With this in mind, they planted ten hectares to vine and their shared dream began. It was a great success when they released the wines. In 2006, they won the Restaurant and Catering Industry Association Perpetual Trophy for the Best Wine exhibited by a small producer at the Sydney Royal Wine Show with their 2002 Riesling. It was a remarkable achievement to gain such an honour. The Best Wine Trophy is the most prestigious award to receive. It says a lot for Duke's Vineyard and for the Porongurup region, too.

Hilde, a successful artist in her own right, designed their unique Cellar Door. While it is ultra-modern, it is also in harmony with the surroundings, as you would expect from an artist. It has a tasting room, an art gallery and a back veranda with a triple-curved roof which doubles as a music shell at festival times.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Shiraz are the wonderful varieties available at their Cellar door.
