About Galafrey Wines

Galafrey Wines is located on Quangellup Road, Mount Barker, Western Australia. It is set in the Great Southern wine region and has spectacular views of the Porongurups and Stirling Ranges. It is owned and operated by Linda and Kim Tyrer and all the operations involved in making the wine are carried out on their estate.

The vineyard was established by the late Ian Tyrer in 1997 and is now in the dedicated hands of his widow and daughter, who work tirelessly to make the vineyard the success that it is. Vincent Lignac, from St Emillion, Bordeaux, is their winemaker

Galafrey Wines was one of the first winemakers to set up in the Great Southern region. They are producers of superb reds and whites, grown from old, un-irrigated vines. This approach, the choice of being a dry-grown vineyard, is unusual in today’s mass market, but Linda and Kim believe it is the right way to go for them. They aim for a low yield with small berries and though this quite definitely reduces their output, it most assuredly enhances the flavour and colour of the fruit, as well bringing the tannins near to the skin.

The grapes are grown and nourished on their vineyard and bottled in their winery. The region is classified as a cool-climate area and as such the vines ripen slowly. This, in turn, allows the fruit to develop rich flavours and raises the quality of the juice.

There are twelve hectares under vine, which include Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Shiraz. They also have a unique white grape variety called Muller-Thurgau, a light, flavourful, fruity grape, with low acid.

The Cellar Door at Galafrey Wines offers spectacular views of the surrounding area and when you visit, you must say ‘Hello’ to ‘Henry, the winery dog, who will greet you at the car park and escort you to the door.’

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Muller-Thurgau, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Shiraz are available here.
