About Gibraltar Rock Wines

The family-owned vineyard known as Gibraltar Rock Wines is located on Woodlands Road, Porongurup, Western Australia. The actual vineyard lies at the foot of Gibraltar Rock, which is one of the most prominent features in the Porongurup Range. The mountain range is reputed to be one of the oldest in the world and its soils are a mixture of granite, with a mixture of loam and gravely soils.

The vineyard under the former owners was well known for its production of high quality Riesling that had floral citrus qualities, with mild acidity. They also produced splendid varieties of Chardonnay and Shiraz.

The present owners bought the vineyard in 2001 and expanded the portfolio of wines to include all the classic wines, as well as Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. They also supply other premium producers in the region with their quality grapes.

Their goal is to continue to produce premium quality wine, grown at the vineyard. For three years, they had the services of Michael Garland’s winery to make their wines, but since 2004, they are made at Forest Hill Winery in Denmark, Western Australia. The current winemaker is Larry Cherubino, with valuable assistance from Shane McKerrow.

The wines they produce all have high ratings, with the Riesling and Chardonnay being the stand outs.

Gibraltar Rock Wines was highly rated in the new release of the Australian Wine Companion, one of just a few in the Great Southern Region to be so honoured. They also were listed as one of the ‘Top Ten Dark Horses’ by James Halliday in the Australian Wine Companion, 2006. He also rated the vineyard with five stars. Which, for such a short time in the industry, is quite an impressive achievement.

Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz are the wonderful wines available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar Door.
