About Matilda's Winery
Matilda’s Winery is located on Hamilton Road, Denmark, Western Australia. It began as an apple orchard, but when Pam and Don Turnbull bought the property in the late 1980s, they changed it into a vineyard and called it Matilda’s Meadow.
They began planting dry-grown vines, including: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Shiraz.
The first winemaker of Matilda’s Winery grapes was Brenden Smith of West Cape Howe Wines; indeed, they were the first wines to be made at West Cape Howe.
The vineyard sits on deep Karri loam and has plenty of rain, clean air and a climate that is ideal for the growing of Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc; perhaps one of the best regions in the world for these varieties.
The viticultural standards are very high, which explains why their wines are so highly regarded. Particularly by James Halliday, who wrote in Australian Wine Companion 2007 Edition, that Matilda's Estate is an ‘excellent producer of very high quality wines.’
They maintain a continuing observance of the grapes as they ripen on the vine and, under the hands of master craftsmen, Coby Ladwig and Brenden Smith, their winemakers, they produce very high quality wines.
Steve Hall, a geologist from the UK, bought the property in 2001 and then, in 2003, bought the vineyard across the road, called Nelson’s Touch. This vineyard was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. The two vineyards now totalled 27 acres and the name changed from Matilda’s Meadow to Matilda’s Estate.
Steve’s knowledge of the earth and its structure is one of the major factors in his ability to get the best out of the land, while making sure that no harm is done to it.
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Shiraz are the wonderful wines to be sampled and purchased at their Cellar Door.
