About Montgomery's Hill
Montgomery's Hill Vineyard is located on the South Coast Highway, fifteen kilometres to the east of Albany, Western Australia. With the Kalgan River on its border and the vineyard lying on north facing slopes, it is the perfect place to grow premium quality grapes.
The whole estate runs to some 200 acres, of which 25 acres are planted to vine. They produce around 70-80 tonnes of grapes a year, which equates to about 5,500 cases, or 66,000 bottles.
The land was settled in 1831, when a grant was given to George Cheyne. In 1889, Charles James Montgomery emigrated from Ireland and bought the estate from George Cheyne. Montgomery cleared the land and planted potatoes, but in later years, when his son, Maxwell, took over the estate he changed it to an apple orchard and dairy cattle farm.
Murray and Pam Montgomery, and Iain and Joan Montgomery are the third generation to run the estate and they changed the nature of the estate once again, this time to the vineyard we see today.
Murray and Pam live in the house that Maxwell built, back in 1937. Before that, Maxwell lived in the apple shed, then built a cottage. When he got married, the magical influence of a woman in his life saw him build the main house, where Murray and Pam now reap the benefits.
In 1996, they planted the vineyard with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Then, in 1997, they added Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz to their portfolio of wines. The vines are hand-picked between March and April.
At their Cellar Door you can sample and purchase from their great selection of wines, which include: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz.
So, why not come along and have a great day out, while tasting some wonderful wines and meet the Montgomery family? You’ll be glad you did.
