About Moombaki Wines
Moombaki Wines are located on Parker Road, Kentdale, via Denmark, Western Australia. Moombaki is a local Aboriginal word that means ‘where the river meets the sky’, which was the inspiration for the family in setting up the vineyard. The hills lined with trees and the abundance of water really do meet the sky.
Moombaki Wines is a small family-owned business. Their aim is to produce high quality wines of which they can be proud. They are very eco-conscious and practice sustainable farming practices to ensure that the land is cared for as they produce their wines.
The estate is a part of the Great Southern Wine Region of Western Australia and has all the gifts that Nature can bestow. It lies on a gravel hillside, facing north and safe from the harsh winds. With the Kent River below on the doorstep, as it were, they have a unique micro-climate, which is very kind to the vines and the fruit which they kindly give up each vintage.
There are two hectares planted to vines; mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, but also with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Malbec and Shiraz.
Their winemaker is James Kellie, who used to be with Howard Park & Madfish Wines, but has now set up his own winery at Harewood Estate. He has been involved in all of their vintages and in 2004, the wines at Moombaki were given a 5-star rating by James Halliday, as well awarding them 94 points out of 100.
They also won six golds and many other wine show medals. 2005 saw a similar record of success. Their Chardonnay gained great reviews when it was released. Their reds, too, will be released soon and the expectation is that they will meet with equal praise.
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Malbec and Shiraz are all available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar Door.
