About Mount Trio Vineyard
The Mount Trio vineyards are located Corner Castle Rock and Porongurup Roads, Porongurup, Western Australia. Porongurup is a sub-region, high in the Great Southern Wine Region.
Gavin Berry, the winemaker, and his wife, Gill Graham, established the vineyard in 1989, with the goal of creating outstanding wines that were affordable; one which also reflect the unique varietal characteristics of the region.
Gavin has a long association with the land, having grown up on a wheat farm in northern New South Wales, and it was his enthusiasm and drive that saw them create this wonderful vineyard on the opposite side of the country.
The vineyard takes its name from the peaks of the spectacular Stirling Ranges which dominate the landscape. The estate runs to a hundred acres on the gravel-covered northern slopes. It enjoys cool breezes, but is protected from the high winds that sometime come through the area.
It is the ideal location for growing grapes of exceptional quality. With its dry summers and cool wet winters, there is no better place for Gavin to follow his dream. Because of the natural gifts the location provides, he is able to employ chemical-free viticultural techniques in the vineyard. The yield is low, less than three tonnes an acre, but the quality of the fruit is very high; just as Gavin wanted.
Mount Trio’s wines were first released in 1995. The range now includes: Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Viognier.
They have twenty acres planted to vine, all cared for by hand by Gavin, Gill and their two children, Oliver and Bridget. Gavin has over eighteen years of experience as a winemaker, having worked at Plantagenet and now, at West Cape Howe. He has made a considerable contribution to the region.
Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Viognier are all available at their Cellar Door.
