About Phillips Brook Estate
Phillips Brook Estate is located on Redmond/Hay River Road, Albany, Western Australia. It is one of the oldest vineyards in the Great Southern region and lies on gravel loam soils on north-facing slope. It also has wonderful views of the Porongurup range and is a magnet for tourists.
The vineyard was established in 1975 and they produce wines of outstanding quality and elegance. The wines reflect all the subtle flavours and characteristics of this cool-climate region.
The Newbury family returned to Western Australia, after spending many years in outback Bourke in New South Wales. It was Albany that beckoned and on their return, they discovered that the oldest commercial vineyard in Albany was up for sale.
They soon decided to purchase the property and set about nursing the old vines back to health and planting new ones, too, to give more variety to the vineyard. David Newbury built the Cellar Door in the old shearing shed, using some of the old timbers and ancient farm materials. The Cellar Door functions not only as a showcase for the wines, but also as an art gallery and studio for Bronwen Newbury’s paintings. Visitors are invited to drop in and taste the wines while viewing the wonderful paintings.
Bronwen has been a professional painter for twenty years and has had success in many exhibitions around Australia. She is known principally for her landscapes, the inspiration and influence which she attributes to her many years in the outback. Now, in Albany, where the landscape is completely different, she paints the coastal scenery and the surrounding vineyards.
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are the wonderful varieties available for sampling and purchase at their Cellar Door. It is a great place to visit, not only for their superb wines, but also to enjoy Bronwen’s paintings, the fresh outdoors and the lovely scenery.
