About Rickety Gate Wines

Rickety Gate Wines can be found on Scotsdale Road, Denmark, Western Australia. It is owned and operated by Russell and Linda Hubbard, who established the vineyard on the north-facing slopes of the Bennett Ranges. It is a cool-climate area with rich Karri loam and gravel soils set amongst the Great Southern Wine Region and is the perfect place to grow top quality grapes.

The vineyard is located around nineteen kilometres along the scenic Scotsdale Road Tourist Route from Denmark and has delightful views of the surrounding landscape.

On New Year’s Day 2000, the Hubbard Family moved from the city life to start a new life with the new year and established the Rickety Gate vineyard. It was their aim to produce premium wines, but not at the expense of the environment. They have what they term a ‘no compromises ethos’ approach to the viticultural processes, which means that their system of vine growing is ‘eco-friendly’.

Once the planting was completed, they built an Estate winery and handed over the winemaking reins to noted winemaker, John Wade, who has been described by James Halliday as being “arguably the most experienced Winemaker in Western Australia”.

The team of Russell and Linda, with their passion for the wine and a penchant for hard work, and the winemaking skills of John, is one that is bound to reach great heights.

Russell and Linda actually chose the site in 1999, having taken heed of the opinion of Dr. John Gladstone, a viticultural scientist, who believed that “the area offered the most true, ‘cool climate’ wine grape growing potential in Western Australia.”

They decided that the ideal amount to plant to vine was five acres to begin with; this was Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Later, they increased that to 7.5 acres and added Riesling.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Shiraz are all available at their Cellar Door.
