About Rokewood

Rokewood Wines is located on Whitworth Road, Mount Barker in the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. It is owned and operated by the Otto family who established the vineyard in 1998. They are producers of wonderful cool-climate wines created for the Australian domestic market. The name ‘Rokewood’ derives from a stencil they found on the property; one that was used when the estate was an orchard.

The Rokewood Vineyard sits between Goundrys and Forest Hill vineyards on the banks of the Hay River, to the west of Mount Barker. The estate runs to about a hundred acres, with thirteen acres planted to vine. It has soils of deep gravel loam and is ideal for the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

The vines were first planted in 1999 and are now yielding about 1.5 tonnes an acre. The proprietors deliberately set out to achieve low yields, as this intensifies the flavour of the wine.

The Great Southern Region is Western Australia's coolest wine-growing region. It generally has warm days and cool nights, which is perfect for growing premium grapes. It is also the largest producer, providing over a third of wine grapes produced in Western Australia.

The Great Southern Region is broken up into five sub-regions, each with its own unique micro-climate. The sub-regions are: Albany, Denmark, Frankland River, Mount Barker and the Porongorups. They provide between them a wonderful variety of premium wines. Many wine companies in other wine regions of Western Australia source grapes from the Great Southern because of the consistent high quality of the grapes.

They use a mixture of both traditional and modern techniques in the winemaking programme at Rokewood. The wines are matured between twelve months and two years in oak. The wines are made at Castle Rock in the Porongorups by Rob Diletti.

Cabernet Sauvignon is available from their web site.
