About Wignalls Wines

Wignalls Wines are located on Chester Pass Road, Albany, Western Australia. The vineyard is in a cool-climate area, being a part of the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia.

They were established in 1982, after a great deal of regional study by Dr Bill Wignall found that the terroir was almost the same as the famous Burgundy region in France. Armed with this information, the proprietors decided to experiment with varieties from the Burgundy region, such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

From the very first vintage they found tremendous success with their wines and won Gold Medals and Trophies for both varieties. Over time, they went on to amass more than fifty Gold and Trophies in Australia and overseas for their superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

With their reputation assured, they expanded their range of wines to include more well-known varieties, such as un-wooded Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot. Through hard work and dedication they have earned themselves a prominent place in Western Australia’s wine industry.

Bill and Pat Wignall and their son, Robert, operate this traditional winery. Before they took up the challenge to begin the vineyard, they had very little knowledge of winemaking, but now, they can count themselves among the very best in Great Southern Region.

Since the first planting of ten acres of vines back in 1982, the Wignalls have enjoyed much success and deserved prestige. Their vineyard now has expanded to 22 hectares, or 35,000 vines. This has come about through steady progress, hard work and careful planning. It also is a testament to their viticultural practices that see the health of the land as important an issue as the quality of their product.

In 1985 their Chardonnay took out Australia’s richest wine prize, which was an all- expenses-paid trip to France’s famous wine regions, for Western Australia’s “Best Table Wine”.

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Shiraz are available at their Cellar Door.
