About Zarephath Wines
Zarephath Wines are located on Moorialup Road, East Porongurup, Western Australia. It is run by members of The Christ Circle, Inc., which is an independent monastic community. It has the priory and vineyard situated at the eastern end of the Porongurup Range. It is a part of the Great Southern Region of Western Australia.
Its members all turn their hands to work on the estate, from toiling in the fields, handling the sales, in administration, and in all other supporting roles. Zarephath is a Hebrew place name which means ‘refinement’ and is taken from the Old Testament story of Elijah.
It is an operation with a difference. The aim is to market the wines while offering a spiritual message. It is also part of their policy that the wines they sell are of the highest possible quality. Some might say, Heavenly!
The vineyard is the easternmost vineyard in the Porongurup region, and is classified as a cool-climate area. The soils of the vineyard range from gravel clay to sandy loam, with clay subsoils and a bedrock of granite.
The yield is kept deliberately low in order to enhance the flavour of the fruit, deepen the colour and strengthen the aromas. They give a lot of attention to every detail at the Zarephath vineyard.
With many willing hands in the live-in community they are able to attend to all the minute details of the viticultural processes and to ensure that a fine balance is struck between the growth of the vegetation and the fruit production. The vines are kept healthy by virtue of shoot thinning, leaf plucking and attention to the canopy. They use a minimum of pesticides and allow natural predators to keep the bugs at bay.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Shiraz are available for tasting and purchase at their Cellar door. They are also available in restaurants and retail outlets throughout Western Australia, in the Eastern States, in New Zealand’s South Island.
